Which Antwerp neighbourhood is best for a hotel?
Antwerp's grand Central Station is a practical hub for city breaks, Belgian rail travel and airport connections. The Eilandje waterfront has a very different character, with contemporary port architecture, the MAS museum, old docks and places to eat.
Choose the station area if you want the easiest first and last hour of your trip. Choose the waterfront if you'd rather wake up near the marina and spend your evening by the docks. The cathedral quarter and Het Zuid offer other experiences, but they are not interchangeable with Central or Eilandje.
Immediately around Antwerpen-Centraal
Hampton by Hilton Antwerp Central Station — Pelikaanstraat 10–16, 2018 Antwerp. Located opposite the main station, this is a practical choice for a short visit and visitors who do not want a complicated arrival with luggage.
NH Collection Antwerp Centre — Pelikaanstraat 84, 2018 Antwerp. A contemporary hotel by the station in the Diamond District. It can serve both a business trip and a relaxed city break while keeping railway access extremely simple.
Lindner Hotel Antwerp – JDV by Hyatt — Lange Kievitstraat 125, 2018 Antwerp. Another full-service station-area option for travellers who value facilities and an easy departure.
These hotels work well if you will spend most of the day outside and only return to sleep. They are not directly beside the cathedral or Scheldt, so expect a walk or public-transport journey for some sightseeing.
Around Eilandje: port views and a different atmosphere
Holiday Inn Express Antwerp City – North — Italiëlei 2A, 2000 Antwerp. A functional mid-range choice near the northern dock area, with access to the Eilandje quarter. It is a useful alternative to paying for a hotel immediately opposite the railway station.
Prize by Radisson, Antwerp City — Tunnelplaats 5, 2000 Antwerp. A design-forward, more streamlined hotel option for travellers who want a base nearer the old port district.
U Eat & Sleep Antwerp — Nassaustraat 42, 2000 Antwerp. A small waterfront hotel by the marina with views towards the MAS; its main attraction is the Eilandje setting rather than cheap or direct station access. Compare actual room categories and guest conditions before choosing it.
You care most about | Area to compare | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Quick rail departure and luggage | Central station | Walk/ride needed for some waterfront visits |
MAS and docks | Eilandje | Farther from the station |
Museums in southern Antwerp | Het Zuid | Requires a different transfer |
Walkable old town | Cathedral / centre | More central tourist activity and possible street noise |
Avoid booking by star rating alone
Prices can vary sharply during fairs, events and weekends. Compare the total cost, room conditions, breakfast, cancellation policy and accessibility. A station hotel may save paid transfers; a waterfront hotel may make your evening feel much more distinctive.
If arriving in a car, confirm parking and Antwerp LEZ requirements first. A hotel garage reservation does not exempt a vehicle from restrictions.
Our recommendation
For a first city break arriving by train, start with the hotels around Antwerpen-Centraal. For a second visit centred on MAS, bars and docks, Eilandje deserves serious consideration. Don't choose a hotel near the station solely because Antwerp has a famous station: choose it because that location makes your itinerary simpler.
