A straightforward day trip from Brussels

Antwerp is easy to reach from Brussels by train. The official SNCB/NMBS departure information gives a typical direct-train journey of around 40–45 minutes, depending on the service and stations. You then arrive at one of Antwerp's main landmarks: Antwerpen-Centraal itself.

For a comfortable day trip, count the train, your journey to the Brussels platform, the walk from Antwerp station into the centre and your return. The city has enough to fill several days, but the station → Meir → Cathedral → Grote Markt → Scheldt route is a satisfying first visit.

Where to board in Brussels

Many trains serving Antwerp call at Brussels-Midi, Brussels-Central or Brussels-North, depending on route. Choose your actual departure station in the SNCB app and make sure the specific train stops there. If you arrive on an international service, check whether your ticket already includes Antwerp before buying another one.

Which station in Antwerp?

Antwerpen-Centraal is the most useful destination for a first historic-city visit. Its architecture is one of the city's great surprises, and the shopping avenue Meir leads west towards the old town.

Antwerpen-Berchem is useful for particular neighbourhoods and connections, but is not the same arrival point for a simple first-time walk to the cathedral and Scheldt. Let your hotel or destination determine whether Berchem makes more sense.

Tickets and fares

SNCB offers tickets online, in its app and at stations. Fares depend on age, journey time and available discounts. Rather than accepting a fixed price quoted by a comparison website, enter the correct date and passenger details in the official planner and compare the options actually offered.

You do not need a Brussels-to-Antwerp 'guided tour package' just to use the train. Independent rail travel is generally straightforward. If you want to pay for an experience in Antwerp, choose the museum or activity separately.

First day in Antwerp: a realistic walking loop

Start by admiring the hall of Antwerpen-Centraal, walk down Meir, then continue to the Cathedral of Our Lady and Grote Markt. From the old town, reach the Scheldt waterfront, which connects the city's medieval wealth with its living port.

If you want one paid museum, choose your speciality:

  • MAS in Eilandje for trade, global connections and the city's story.
  • KMSKA for fine art, in the southern museum quarter.
  • MoMu for Antwerp's fashion culture, closer to the historic centre.

These museums are not all next door; don't cram them into one short afternoon. At the time of writing, the historic Rubenshuis residence remains closed for restoration, while its other visitor experiences follow separate rules.

Return train and useful practical tips

Allow time to walk back to Antwerpen-Centraal. If you stay late for dinner, check the final services beforehand: platform changes, construction and weekends can affect your options. The route may be direct, but the exact last departure is not a reliable evergreen fact.

You can store bags in official SNCB lockers at Antwerpen-Centraal, subject to availability and the operator's current rates. An overnight stay is also worth considering if you want Eilandje, Het Zuid and multiple museums.
