Antwerp in one day: choose your own second half
Antwerp has a grand railway station, intimate medieval lanes, a working-river identity and world-class museums. You can enjoy all these contrasts in one day without crossing the whole city several times. Start at Antwerpen-Centraal, walk west to the old town and the Scheldt, then choose either the northern MAS/Eilandje neighbourhood or a southern fashion and fine-arts route.
Trying to combine MAS, KMSKA, MoMu and every historical attraction in a short day is unrealistic. A single substantial museum plus the old town is a much better first visit.
When | Suggested route | Allow |
|---|---|---|
Morning | Antwerpen-Centraal and Meir | 60–75 min |
Late morning | Cathedral area, Grote Markt, old lanes | 75–90 min |
Lunch | Historic centre | 60 min |
Afternoon A | Riverfront and MAS/Eilandje | 90–150 min |
Afternoon B | MoMu and/or KMSKA district | 90–150 min |
These times include casual stops but not long museum queues.
Step 1: Antwerpen-Centraal is already a sight
Take a moment to appreciate the architecture of Antwerpen-Centraal, rather than leaving the station immediately. From there, head west along Meir, a busy shopping street which makes the transition towards the historic centre feel gradual: this is a commercial city, not simply a collection of medieval monuments.
If you arrive by rail from Brussels, the SNCB/NMBS planner is the official place for current services. Keep luggage plans realistic — an extended walk with a suitcase quickly becomes unpleasant.
Step 2: Cathedral, Grote Markt and hidden alleys
Around Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal) you meet the city's historic trading wealth and its connection to Rubens. The cathedral's exterior and nearby square are worthwhile even if you do not buy admission.
Continue to Grote Markt, with its guildhouses and town hall, and seek out the narrow Vlaeykensgang passage. Walk respectfully: this is a small, lived-in urban space, not a theme park. For a local official route covering several of these places, see Visit Antwerp's budget-friendly walk.
Step 3: the Scheldt and a choice of museums
Follow the centre towards the Scheldt (Schelde). The river explains why Antwerp became a major trading city. You need no cruise to appreciate the waterfront, but a separately researched harbour experience can be worthwhile on a longer stay.
From here, make one of two afternoon choices:
Option A — MAS and Eilandje: port city in the present
Walk north towards Eilandje and the Museum aan de Stroom (MAS), where collections tell stories of the city, its connections and its port. Even if you do not enter a paid exhibition, the museum's public boulevard and panorama are attractions in their own right. The rooftop viewpoint has stair access, so visitors who cannot use stairs should consult the museum's accessibility guidance.

Option B — fashion and fine art in the south
If fashion is your priority, choose MoMu on Nationalestraat. Its exhibitions regularly change, so the current show matters more than a generic “permanent collection” promise. Fine-art lovers can instead allocate a longer museum visit to KMSKA in the southern museum quarter, with its substantial permanent collection and temporary programme. Both are excellent choices, but their locations mean you should plan your route rather than adding them as if they stood next door to Grote Markt.

Important 2026 caveat: Rubenshuis and Plantin-Moretus
The historic Rubenshuis residence is closed for restoration, with reopening expected no earlier than 2030. The Rubens Experience, garden and library are open, but they are not the same as touring the historic home. Rubenshuis renovation notice.
The Museum Plantin-Moretus also announced closure of its permanent visitor exhibition 3 August–4 December 2026 for renovation; do not plan to enter its normal museum route during that period. Plantin-Moretus notice.
If you only have half a day
Keep the Central Station → Meir → Cathedral → Grote Markt → Scheldt walk. Leave MAS, MoMu and KMSKA for another visit. Most of the route can be enjoyed without buying a ticket.
