Which Antwerp museum is worth your time?

Antwerp is a museum city with a remarkably broad identity: major European painting, avant-garde fashion, a long printing tradition and a port-facing museum about the city and the wider world. The trick is not to choose only by fame. Several well-known sites have different opening conditions in 2026, including important renovation closures.

MAS: the museum that explains Antwerp's position in the world

The Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) in the Eilandje district connects Antwerp's history with trade, migration, food and wider cultural exchanges. Its changing programme sits alongside permanent presentations. It is an excellent way to understand why the city belongs to both the Scheldt and the world.

You can enjoy MAS without buying a ticket to every exhibition: its museum boulevard and panorama are public spaces. But there is an accessibility detail often omitted in guides: the rooftop panorama requires a staircase, while the lift reaches a lower viewing level. Ask the museum for the best available accessible route.

KMSKA: the best first choice for fine art

The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) combines a major historic collection with newer exhibitions. It makes an excellent dedicated cultural afternoon, particularly for people who want to spend time with painting rather than rushing from one landmark to another.

The museum is in the southern museum district, not beside Grote Markt or MAS. Plan your public transport or walking time; do not book a tight museum timeslot immediately after a long harbour visit.

MoMu: Antwerp's fashion identity

MoMu, the Fashion Museum Antwerp, is the natural choice if you are drawn to designers, the Antwerp Six and the creative process behind clothing. Exhibitions turn over, so the show on the date you visit matters more than the name on the building. The museum also has a substantial collection of Belgian fashion and related archives.

In autumn 2026, the programme includes an exhibition about the Antwerp Six, scheduled through 17 January 2027. Check for ticketed special exhibitions and reduced rates before going.

Rubenshuis: the historic house is not open

The name can mislead visitors. The historic residence of Peter Paul Rubens is closed for restoration and is not scheduled to reopen before 2030. However, you can visit the Rubens Experience, the redesigned baroque garden and the library according to their individual access terms.

If you want an experience centred on the painter, this can still be rewarding, but it is not a tour of the original living quarters. The Rubens Experience has a timed presentation; the museum encourages advance booking and a separate garden ticket may be available.

Plantin-Moretus: printing heritage, temporary closure in 2026

The Museum Plantin-Moretus is a highly distinctive historic printing house and museum in the old centre. It normally deserves a place on a shortlist for history, books and craftsmanship. However, the museum announced closure from 3 August through 4 December 2026 while updating the permanent exhibition. The reading room remains open under separate conditions; it should not be mistaken for access to the normal visitor route.

Visitors travelling in October or November 2026 should not buy an itinerary expecting the museum's ordinary galleries to be open. Recheck reopening details closer to December.

Cathedral and city: a different kind of collection

The Cathedral of Our Lady is both a place of worship and an essential building in Antwerp's artistic history, with important works by Rubens. Visiting rules can differ from those of a conventional museum, especially during services and religious events. Consult the cathedral's official admission information before adding it to a museum day.

Which combination makes sense?

For a first day, see the old town and then pick one: MAS for port and culture, KMSKA for paintings, or MoMu for fashion. For a second day, add the Rubens Experience or a different museum district. Keep Plantin-Moretus on your future list once it reopens; do not pretend its galleries are available during renovation.

Before purchasing an Antwerp City Pass, compare the current list of included venues and durations against your actual visits, taking these closures into account. A pass is not automatically good value for one paid museum and a scenic walk. Official Antwerp City Pass.
